It depends on your lawn size, terrain, and personal preference. For small, flat gardens, electric lawn mowers are usually sufficient. For medium to large lawns, petrol lawn mowers provide more power and freedom of movement. If you prefer a quiet, eco-friendly option, consider a cordless lawn mower or even a robotic mower for fully automated cutting. Read our guide on choosing the right lawn mower.
Cutting width determines how much grass you cut in one pass. For small lawns (under 200m²), a 30 – 34 cm cutting width is ideal for easy manoeuvring. Medium lawns (200–500m²) benefit from 35 – 40 cm, while large lawns (over 500m²) are best handled with 40 cm+ to save time on mowing. You can filter our lawn mowers by using the ‘Cut Width’ filter.
Basic lawn mower maintenance includes regularly cleaning the deck to prevent grass build-up, checking and sharpening the lawn mower blade every few months, and replacing air filters and spark plugs (for petrol lawnmowers) annually. Keep blades sharp for a clean cut and store your lawn mower in a dry place to prevent rust.
Push lawn mowers are more affordable, lightweight, and ideal for small, flat lawns. Self-propelled lawn mowers are better for larger or sloped gardens, as they use engine power to drive the wheels, reducing physical effort and making mowing quicker and easier. Read more on the differences between push and self propelled lawn mowers.
Always wear sturdy shoes (not sandals), clear the lawn of debris before lawn mowing, and keep children and pets away from the mowing area. For petrol lawn mowers, refuel only when the engine is cool, and never tilt the lawn mower while it’s running. Unplug electric lawn mowers before clearing blockages or adjusting blades.
Lawn mowers typically last between 5 to 10 years, but can vary significantly depending on the type of lawn mower, brand quality, and how well it’s looked after.
If you haven’t tried sharpening lawn mower blades before, we’d recommend seeking expert assistance or guidance.
Attempting to sharpen your lawn mower blades without proper knowledge exposes you and your equipment to numerous dangers.

Using a lawn mower on wet grass can be tricky. Wet blades of grass tend to clump together, which can clog your mower and result in an uneven cut. You can read our guide on using a lawn mower on wet grass by clicking here.
