Petrol Chainsaw Troubleshooting guide Petrol chainsaws are powerful and reliable tools, but like any engine-driven equipment, they can occasionally be difficult to start. We have put together this troubleshooting guide to help with the most common issues we hear from customers, and some practical steps we suggest taking before seeking professional help. My Chainsaw Won’t Start There are many reasons why a petrol chainsaw may not start at all. Look at the Basics First Check the fuel level and mix: Is there petrol in the tank? Is the petrol fresh and properly mixed with two-stroke oil? Old or poorly mixed fuel will not start the engine. Check the On/Off switch: Is the stop switch in the “on” or “run” position? Follow the manufacturer’s starting procedure: Is the choke being used in the correct way? Common Cause: Flooded Engine A very common reason for a petrol chainsaw not starting at all is a flooded carburettor. This can happen if the choke has been left on for too long, or if the starter cord has been pulled too many times in quick succession. If the carburettor has flooded the engine with petrol, you should: Stop trying to start it. Leave it for several hours or even better, overnight. This allows the excess petrol to evaporate. Try starting it again, this time without using the choke. If the above does not work then it is likely that the starting issue is caused by a mechanical fault such as a blocked air filter, a fouled spark plug or a carburettor issue. My Chainsaw Is Hard to Start If your petrol chainsaw will start, but only with an enormous effort, there are two different causes and the best way to proceed is often dependent on whether the saw is new or well used. Brand New Chainsaws Petrol chainsaws will always be on the stiff side the first few times you use them, but they will settle down as the engine beds in. Tip: A firm, confident pull on the starter cord is often required, especially on the first few starts. Older Chainsaws If an older chainsaw becomes hard to start, it can be a sign of wear or a maintenance issue. Check for issues such as: Petrol mix: Fresh petrol is a lot easier to start than old, stale fuel. Always use fresh, properly mixed petrol. Air filter: A dirty or blocked air filter starves the engine of air and affects starting. Spark plug: A worn or dirty spark plug will weaken the ignition and make it harder to start. If the above does not improve the starting condition of the chainsaw, it may require a service or professional diagnosis.
